WMA as opposed to MP3 formats. Really, this depends on the individual a lot believe it or not. Not too long ago I was trying to figure out the difference myself and I just couldn’t come up with any clear answers. I mean really, the format is the difference, but what does that mean exactly?

The WMA attractiveness comes from Microsoft’s claim that this format is the most accurate audio format available to date. The Windows Media Audio (WMA) format is definitely bulky enough to back up this claim. Recordings of the same clip in WMA format will nearly always be larger than those of MP3s. Microsoft has tried to make up for this my having the WMA format play at a higher bitrate than MP3s. That is- make it go faster. A lot of people still aren’t convinced.

MP3 or MPEG3 stands for Moving Picture Experts Group-Layer 3, so yeah, MP3 works much better for marketing purposes. The idea behind MP3s was to make the files themselves smaller than WMAs. They do this by eliminating the audio range that has been deemed inaudible by the human ear. This greatly reduces the space needed for the audio file and enables more music or audio files to be stored. Currently MP3 files are used mostly in MP3 players for purchased and pirated- amen- backed-up music files.

Looking at both WMA and MP3 files on the same audio player you have to wonder which one will sound better and the answer is, it’s hard to tell. A lot of this depends on your player’s capability. WMAs sound better than MP3s at the same bitrate, but the average person will not be able to tell the difference unless they really concentrate. So that’s no help in deciding things at all. So you can eliminate bitrate differential from our argument here.

MP3 files are smaller by an average of 1/3 and that is an advantage to the format. On the smaller hard drives that came with the original digital music players, MP3 files were preferred because you could store more of them on a device. Now, this wouldn’t seem like as big of a deal, but consumers have grown used to MP3s and they have become the portable music standard. WMAs are used on computers and in a lot of games for Windows where hard drive space and processing speed are not really issues.

WMAs will play on “MP3″ players, mostly. You have to remember when music players first came out, space was limited. Because of the limited space, smaller files were preferred. The size comparison of the files has not changed any, but the size of the hard drives has. The thing is though; everyone is already used to dealing with MP3s, so stick with what you know.

Converting WMA to MP3 or vice-versa is a step you can take to make sure all of your audio formats are the same. The software for these conversions is easy enough to find, though depending on the file size and your PC’s processor can take a little time. Remember though, the more you convert the worse the audio quality will become. There will always be a bit of quality loss when converting.

Taking a look at WMAs versus MP3 formats, I’d say go with the MP3 if you’re just an everyday person. There’s no point in using the added room that WMAs have built into them unless you’re a musician or otherwise wish to alter the original format. So it looks like MP3 are going to be the standard for music players for a long time.

The EU commission wants a set limit on the maximum volume on all MP3 & MP4 players which are sold within the EU. These limits will apply to the Apple iPod range

The EU proposals follow after the latest report published in 2009 that highlighted that up to 10 million citizens in the EU are in danger of permanent hearing loss as a result of listening to loud music for long periods of time

Experts at the EU Commission would like the default maximum volume to be at 85 decibels. However users could override this set limit and turn the volume to a maximum limit of 100 decibels.

Last month, a two-month consultation of all EU standardization committees started on these volume limit proposals. The commission hopes that a final agreement could be reached within 12 weeks

Disturbing results were found at testing facilities where various MP3 / MP4 players were examined by researchers. A number of of the players had a maximum volume level of 120 decibels, that’s the same as an airplane taking off. This is the issue that the EU hopes to resolve, as at the moment no set safety default volume level applies.

However MP3 player manufacturers have to by law, include information about risks in their instruction manuals. For all practical purposes though, nobody reads these, and it doesn’t actually stop the consumer from increasing the volume to maximum. What’s more,a study has indicated that deafness amongst younger people is increasing as a direct result of the use of listing to loud music on earphones.

MP3 players are perceived as being more dangerous than CD players or the ‘Walkman’ because they can store many hours of music and have a long battery life, which allows users to listen to them continuously for long periods without a break. Often while driving when the volume is very high to drown out outside noise. Over time the resulting injury to hearing can be similar that seen in previous years caused by industrial noise.

A man from New Zealand discovers US army information on second hand MP3 player, according to reports from New Zealand TV

The guy at in the middle of it Chris Ogle says he found the US army information files when he went to download MP3s from his computer to his MP3 player one morning.

The New Zealander says recovered the secret information regarding US military personnel on an Mp3 / mp4 player he acquired from a second hand shop in Oklahoma, USA.

Chris Ogle, 29, said: “The more I look at it, the more I see and the less I think I should be looking.”

The classified data files included the names and also the telephone numbers of US soldiers, according to news reports by a news channel in New Zealand.

Nevertheless, the Pentagon can relax a little, as according the opinion of one expert, these confidential files in question, should not be cause for a security risk, as they are dated from 2005, therefore are already 5 years old.

Still there could be some embarrassment in the top brass, as various files found included the warning that the release of this information is “prohibited by federal law”.

Along with the personal details of the US soldiers, including a list of their social security numbers, the digital files also recorded pregnant female troops, who will by now be female troop mothers, and apparent briefings of missions in Afghanistan.

A spokesman from the Center for Strategic Studies in New Zealand, said of course that while this information should not be circulating in the public domain. He felt it was not likely that it would have a negative affect on US national security.

“This is just slack administrative procedures which are indeed a cause of embarrassment,” he said.

Mr Ogle, from Whangarei mean time , said he would give the digital files to the US government if requested.

At the moment there’s still no statement from the US Embassy in Wellington.

This is not the first time that such laps in security surrounding secret US military information stored electronically.

There was a very similar tale in Afghanistan in 2006 It was reported that US investigators found stolen flash USB drives that held confidential US military information from local shops close to the US base there.

A new music file format called MusicDNA will give record companies, recording artists and distributors up to 32GB of information to hold, things like album cover art, song lyrics, and even up-to-the minute blog posts and concert guides, along with a sound file.

If there is a strong enough interest from the music and technology industry, it’s just possible there could be a challenge to the longstanding MP3, giving users a more album-like experience with a digital format, but more notably, it will mean musicians and content owners have a justification to charge more per download.

The MusicDNA format was launched by Bach Technology on Sunday at MIDEM a music-industry conference under way in Cannes, France. Unlike current alternatives to the MP3, for example Windows Media Audio (WMA) and Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), MusicDNA is not actually a new audio technology, and luckily doesn’t require new audio codecs, an important point. Rather, as Stefan Kohlmeyer, CEO of Batch, the man behind MusicDNA explained in an interview, MusicDNA is an add-on to existing audio formats.

So what is it that MusicDNA does? Well, it’s fascinating. It goes about analyzing the sound file itself for certain characteristics in 13 categories for example tempo and mood. This data is then encoded as XML and is stored with the file. Record labels can also include data, including lyrics and album art, to be included with the file.

What’s more, this data can also be updated when the user is connects to the internet–for example, concert listings could be updated as soon as they’re announced, complete with links to buy tickets. Bach is hoping to generate money by licensing the MusicDNA format out to software and hardware producers.

Now, one big advantage that Bach has is that because MusicDNA isn’t a new audio technology, it means that MusicDNA files should play on existing hardware and software. So MusicDNA could work on MP3 / MP4 players if adopted by the manufactures. The player will be able to read the audio file, and discount the information stored as XML. Because of this, MusicDNA could avoid the same fate of other formats such as Sony’s ATRAC or even Windows Media Audio. Watch this space!

Set your music free with a new digital audio player, or MP3 player, as they are commonly known. With an MP3 player it is easy to shuffle your songs in any order and you can hold your entire music collection the palm of your hand. But where is your music actually stored?

Older MP3 players use a hard drive to store music files. Hard drives offer amazing amounts of memory for file storage. The iPod Classic has up to 160GB. However, players with hard drives are heavier, and have generally poorer battery life, as the hard drive has moving parts inside it, and requires more power to operate them.

More recently MP3 player manufactures have started using flash memory to replace mini hard drives. There are now very few MP3 players that use hard drives. Instead they have an inbuilt flash memory chip and often have a slot to hold a second flash memory card, thereby increasing the player’s memory.

Both manufactures and consumers have found benefits with flash memory based MP3 players. As a flash memory chip is very small compared to a hard drive, it means that manufactures can create very small MP3 players. Flash memory also uses considerably less energy, and so there are big improvements in battery life.

Flash memory does have it’s constraints. Mainly that that the memory capacity is much less than a hard drive. Flash memory usually comes in 8GB and 16GB sizes, which is much smaller than a 160GB player from Apple. Also, additional flash memory cards to add to your MP3 player can be expensive.

There’s more to an MP3 player than just music. Almost all MP3 players now come with a color display in a range of different sizes. The smallest are usually 1.8 inch and they can be as big as 4.3 inch or 5 inch. This has transformed MP3 players into videos players too. While watching full length movies on 1.8 inch screen may not be practical, it’s still fun to watch short video clips or music videos. The larger screen MP3 players can come with 16:9 ratio screen, and it’s a perfect way to watch movie.

There is really just one real market leader when it comes to portable media devices for music and videos, and that is without doubt the Apple iPod. But that doesn’t indicate that the iPod is the only competition in town — not by a long shot. There are quite a lot of outstanding alternatives to the ubiquitous Apple label that are as good as not only in features but also in quality and cost. Take the latest Gen 5 line of the Archos mp3 players as an example. For the quality and the price of this device it gets my highest vote. I purchased the 80GB 605 Wifi model a few months ago and am absolutely sure that I made the right choice in ditching my iPod.

There are many characteristics that split Archos MP3 players from the rest of the pack. Of course, the device plays music, and with 80GB of storage space, I’ve been able to load my entire collection onto the 605 Wifi with plenty of room to spare. It supports numerous assorted types of five, including .wav,.mp3, and the.WMA whether it is protected or not. This means I don’t have to mess around with conversion software before loading the songs, making Archos MP3 players far more convenient and versatile than other products.

You get a bunch more than a simple music player with the Gen 5 line though. You can very easily navigate through all of the menus in the Archos line up of MP3 players with either your finger or the stylus that comes incorporated on an absolutely high quality 4.3 inch color touchscreen. The exceptional quality of the screen makes it perfect for watching TV shows, streaming YouTube videos, or even watching movies. Because of the sharp an amazing quality of the picture you can see it in an array of distinctive lighting situations. I’ve seen people trying to watch stuff on their tiny iPod screens, and I just have to shake my head in sympathy. The Archos MP3 player is a bunch better choice than the smaller iPod so there’s no reason to put yourself through the misery of that situation.

One of the really cool features that I enjoy about the Archos MP3 players the fact that I don’t have to be connected to a laptop to deal with my content. Because it has a straightforward WiFi connection, I can do all of my downloading on the go. Also, the incorporated Opera web browser makes it simple for me to surf the Internet, check my email, and play games wherever I am — something that’s not possible with most other devices out there. With those other brands, you’re basically stuck with whatever content is on the player already, and can’t perform an update until the next time you’re sitting in front of your PC.

If you’re thinking about buying a portable media player, don’t just follow the herd and acquisition an high-priced iPod merely because of the brand name. You won’t go wrong trying out the Gen 5 Archos MP3 player. They’re a lot more sophisticated than the competition and cost less. So be a sharp shopper and get the most for your dollar.

Due to the fascination that revolves around the MP3 Player, it’s no surprise you want to figure out which is the best one for you. The first thing to consider is that these can be extremely confusing to a lot of people thanks to all the various functions. In today’s world you can find one just about anywhere, but knowing the quality of each of them is a different matter. Some are basic while others double as video players and give you advanced audio functions. The point is you can’t find too many versions that just play music anymore. To know what you should buy, you have to figure out which features you truly want and which you could do without.

Take the Apple iPod for example, it used to be just for playing music. However newer versions incorporate advanced features not present in other units. One of the MP3 player basics is function simplicity. All these extra features are nice but some of us will never use them, and as such we don’t want to pay money for something we are never going to use.

While the iPod may be the main (perhaps only) brand name that first comes to mind when discussing MP3 players, there are several others out there. There’s even cheaper “knock-offs” from smaller companies that are out there, but these don’t offer all the benefits. Due to legalities in the industry, these companies stick with just giving their consumers the ability to play music. The bigger companies look at the big picture.

Another one of the MP3 player basics is that it has to have good battery life. A cheap model may still use the old AAA sized batteries that wear out quickly. Most models made with any quality will use rechargeable lithium ion batteries. When buying a player you have to decide whether you want to buy batteries every month, or simply recharge it.

Durability is usually the most overlooked area when it comes to music players. Everyone jumps on the hyped up bandwagon of a new product, but most of us forget about the longevity of the product. This can lead to products that are easily damaged, break down, or simply don’t live up to the durability factors.

You don’t see durability issues often with major name brands, but the smaller, less expensive companies try to cut corners whenever they can. In order to stay away from this trap, it’s recommended that you do your research before actually making your purchase. The Apple iPod is a great example of how they are sent through test after test in order prior to being released to the public. Keep in mind you can still break it, but it won’t happen from just turning it on and using it appropriately.

One final MP3 player basic to consider before buying is the button layout. On very rare occasions you may find a basic player that has no buttons other than play or stop. I’m not joking; these do exist, although they aren’t sold at very many outlets. These are the very bottom barebones models that are cheap, and often fail within a month or two.

So in closing before buying any kind of player remember to go over the MP3 player basics. Check for function, audio formats supported, battery life, durability, and general quality. If you don’t want to do bother because it’s time consuming you can just buy an Apple iPod. These are one of the most sought after players on the market for a reason. If money is a concern then simply buy an older generation iPod - plenty of new units are almost always available for the previous generation, and you can find savings of 10% and upwards, without sacrificing the most important features.
